A graduate of the Institute of Political Science (1973); Ph.D. in Political Science (1978); D.Litt. in Political Science (1998); Professor Extraordinarius at University of Warsaw (2000); Professor of Humanities in Political Science (2002); Professor Ordinarius (2004); Jean Monnet Chair since 2008.

Head of PhD Studies Programme, Faculty of Journalism and Political Science, University of Warsaw; Head of the Department of History and Theory of International Relations at the Institute of International Relations, Faculty of Journalism and Political Science, University of Warsaw; in the years 1978-1981 Vice-Director of the Institute; Member of the Advisory Board at the Chair of European Studies, Faculty of Journalism and Political Science, University of Warsaw; Member of the National Committee for Cooperation with the International Political Science Association (IPSA), Division I Social Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences; Expert at the State Accreditation Committee. Expert at the State Accreditation Committee. Member of the Commission of National Security Strategic Review established by the President of the Republic of Poland.

Professor Ryszard Zięba was also a Member of the Steering Committee of the Standing Group on International Relations at the European Consortium for Political Research (1997-2004), Polish Affairs Coordinator at the Central and East European International Studies Association (1996-2006), and a Member of the Board of the Polish Association of Political Science (2004-2007). He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Zagreb (1980, 1982, 1984), the George Washington University in Washington, DC (1994/1995) and at the Western European Union Institute for Security Studies in Paris (2000).

International security, foreign and security policies of Poland, and Central and Eastern European states, European integration, theories of security, foreign policy and international relations.

Seminar Themes

Security studies: traditional and contemporary challenges and threats to state security and international security. International disputes, conflicts and crises e.g.: Ukrainian, Afghan, Iraqi, Syrian, Middle Eastern, Iranian, North Korean, conflicts in Africa. Preventive diplomacy and crisis management. Armaments, arms control and disarmament. Non-military aspects of security: economic, energy, ecological, social, humanitarian, etc.

Foreign and security policy of Poland, neighbouring states, and powers (USA, Russia, Great Britain, France, Germany, China, India, Brazil) and the European Union. Roles of institutions in shaping international order (roles of the UN, NATO, the EU, OSCE, CIS, G-7/8, BRICS, and regional groupings).

European integration process. European Union’s external policies: commercial, development,  foreign, security and defence policy. Poland within the EU.
